Illinois Violent Death Reporting System
Frequently Asked Questions
IVDRS funding
Do other states have National Violent Death Reporting Systems? Which ones? How are they funded?
NVDRS is a national program funded by the CDC. Currently, 17 states receive funding to participate in NVDRS. Please see http://www.preventviolence.net for more information on NVDRS.
Where does IVDRS funding come from? Why is the funding of other states different?
IVDRS applied for funding from the Centers for Disease Control in 2004, and was approved but not funded. Private foundations including The Joyce Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, the Chicago Community Trust, and the Illinois Violence Prevention Authority stepped in to ensure that IVDRS was able to launch that first year. Beginning in June 2006, IVDRS has been funded by the Illinois Department of Public Health, the Joyce Foundation and the Chicago Department of Public Health. Other states that have applied to the CDC and were approved but not funded by the CDC do not have a violent death reporting system.
