Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC) is a data-driven obesity prevention effort with an emphasis on evaluation; its focus is on children aged three to five years, their caretakers, and those who work with their parents and caretakers. CLOCC resides within the Mary Ann and J. Milburn Smith Child Health Research Program at the Children's Memorial Research Center, an arm of Children's Memorial Hospital. The Smith Program is dedicated to the better understanding of conditions that affect child populations and of means to prevent and improve them.

Transportation that is Active and Safe for Kids (TASK)
Student Travel Project
The goal of TASK is to increase the use of non-motorized travel, especially biking and walking, in everyday activities such as going to and from school and shopping. Incorporating this kind of physical activity into daily life requires no special equipment and fits easily into daily schedules. A collaborative of numerous organizations, TASK launched its Student Travel Project in Spring 2002. This project will build school- and community-based initiatives that encourage students to bike and walk to school and improve the safety of such travel. The Project is working with four Chicago communities: Ashburn, Uptown, West Garfield Park and West Town.

Phase I of the project used surveys and focus groups to understand what factors influence family decision-making around transportation to and from school. During Phase II, from now through September 2004, we will use the information from Phase I to educate communities and guide community-level working groups. Each working group in each community will develop a plan that addresses barriers to non-motorized travel to school and promotes such travel as an option for local schoolchildren. This plan will form the basis of the third and final implementation phase.

The TASK Student Travel Project is a pilot project of the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children (CLOCC) and is funded by the Chicago Community Trust. For more information, contact Liz Wuerffel by email, or by phone at 312-573-7767.
